"Restorative justice is a fast-growing state, national, and international social movement that seeks to bring together people to address the harm caused by crime," write Mark Umbreit and Marilyn Peterson Armour. "Restorative justice views violence, community decline, and fear-based responses as indicators of broken relationships. Restorative justice includes direct mediation and conflict resolution between the offender, the victims, their families, and the community. She is a thought leader in restorative justice pedagogy and practices, and lent her expertise to pilot one of the first school-based restorative justice programs in Oakland, California, as well as one of the first survivor-oriented restorative justice diversion programs outside of California. Restorative justice doesn’t work as an add-on. It requires us to address the roots of student “misbehavior” and a willingness to rethink and rework our classrooms, schools, and school districts.
