"Restorative justice is a fast-growing state, national, and international social movement that seeks to bring together people to address the harm caused by crime," write Mark Umbreit and Marilyn Peterson Armour. She is a thought leader in restorative justice pedagogy and practices, and lent her expertise to pilot one of the first school-based restorative justice programs in Oakland, California, as well as one of the first survivor-oriented restorative justice diversion programs outside of California. Restorative justice doesn’t work as an add-on. It requires us to address the roots of student “misbehavior” and a willingness to rethink and rework our classrooms, schools, and school districts.
